For the first time in decades enough public awareness has accumulated to lead to pressure courts and the political system in Egypt to force security personnel - mainly police officers and rank officers - to withstand trial for crimes of abuse of power, maltreatment and torture leading to death in few of HUNDREDS of cases that have become normal in the daily life of the citizens of many Arab countries, where police brutality and misconduct is often systematic and institutionally founded, and until recently, was totally denied and covered up by the state.
Few cases have been won and justice partially rectified in a legal environment that is not favourable and short of protecting the victims of such abuses; but many other cases have either never reached court or dismissed thereafter. New cases of abuse occur every day.
