04 Julius Caesar's 4th Legion - Roman Bull T Shirts by deyganwolf

This Legion was founded in Italy by Julius Caesar in 48 BC for his upcoming war with Pompey. It served in Macedonia from 47-44, and was one of the many Legions earmarked for his massive Parthian Campaign. After Caesar's murder, Marc Antony recalled the Legion to Italy, but it soon sided with Octavian, and at Modena in 43 the Legion fought for him against Antony. In 42 it fought for the Triumvirs at Philippi, and returned to Italy with Octavian, where it again fought against Antony. In 31 it was at the Battle of Actium, and Octavian/Augustus then stationed the Legion in Hispania Tarraconensis, where it fought in his campaigns against the Cantabrians from 25-13 BC. Emperor Cladius sent the Legion to Germania Superior in 41 AD, where it was when Nero killed himself in 69. Throughout the troubles during the reigns of Otho, Galba, and Vespasian, the Legion guarded Germania Superior against Germanic tribes, but Vespasian eventually reconstituted the Legion as the IV Flavia Felix. Like most Caesarian Legions, its emblem was the bull.
