22 Augustus' 22nd Legion - Roman Eagle Tees by deyganwolf
These troops were integrated into the Roman Army when Galatia was annexed by Emepror Augustus in 25 BC. The Legion was made up of the survivors of an army initially built up between 62-48 BC by the Galatian King Deiotarus, a loyal ally of Rome whom Pompey had made King of all Celts in Turkey in 63. After that army was defeated by King Pharnaces of Pontus, the survivors were regrouped into a single Legion, which initially fought under Julius Caesar at the Battle of Zela in 47. When integrated into the Roman Army, it was given the number and title XXII Deiotariana, since the Augustan Legions at the time numbered 1-21. It was stationed at Alexandria for over a century, commanded by a prefect instead of a Senator, to prevent any Senator from using the Legion to attempt to cut off the vital grain supply from Egypt and bid for Rome's throne. Soldiers of the Legion built structures in Akfahas, south of Memphis, worled in the granite quarries of Mons Claudianus, and left signatures on the southern Colossi of Memnon. In 63 AD, the Legion served in the Parthian expedition of Domitius Corbulo. It fought in the Jewish War of 66-70, their courage praised by the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus. During the Civil War of 69, after Nero's position became untenable, the Legion was one of those that sided with Vespasian, who would emerge victorious and become Emperor. The last known mention of the Legion is in 119, still at Alexandria. It was probably destroyed during the 132-36 Jewish revolt of Simon ben Kosiba. When the Legions were catalogued in 145, the XXII Deiotariana no longer existed. Its emblem is unknown.
