356 rev counter, from air cooled racing car mousepad by techvinci

This 356 rev counter gauge (or tachometer as it is sometimes known) was found on some of the best air cooled racing cars from the seventies. The famous Speedster and 550 Spyder, to name but a few, were both equipped with a similar instrument. It shows 6000rpm and comes from a classic car which used to be a regular sight on the race track, among others Le Mans, Nurburgring and Carrera Panamericana. Porsche gained a lot of respect by winning numerous motorsport events in during those years, at first with their four cylinder air cooled engine, later with the legendary flat-six. Of course the Volkswagen Beetle had a similar aircooled engine but couldn't nearly rev so high or drive as fast as the 356 and later the 911. By the way, the Beetle is called the VW Bug in some parts. The successful 356 model from Stuttgart was eventually succeeded by the much faster 911 which had more horsepower. Was it acceleration, speed or reliability which made this racing car so successful? Whatever the case, the rev counter in front of many winning racing drivers would have been this one – with the needle at the red line!
