The 42ID adopted a shoulder patch and unit crests acknowledging the nickname. A popular myth persists that the 42ID patch symbolizes half a rainbow, memorializing the half of the 42ID soldiers which became casualties during combat in World War I. However, this is not correct as contemporary photographs of the division during the First World War clearly show soldiers (to include division commanders) wearing half a rainbow as their shoulder sleeve insignia.
