This was taken in Wetlands Park in Orange County, Florida. The park cleans the City of Orlando's wastewater by allowing the marshland to filter it through a series of berms. The water is crystal clear by the time it is filtered into the St. John's River. Wildlife is abundant here. The alligator is front and left in the photograph. The average size for an adult female American alligator is eight feet, and the average size for a male is 11 feet. Exceptionally large males can reach a weight of nearly half a ton or 1,000 pounds. American alligators may live to about 50 years in the wild. The alligator became the official state reptile of Florida in 1987. Spanish sailors visiting the New World thought the unfamiliar alligator was a huge lizard. In Spanish, el lagarto means the lizard. English sailors took the name as allagarter and in time it has become alligator.
