American Flag of the Fremont Expedition Card

The unusual flag carried by John C. Fremont during his western Expeditions of the mid-1840's was sewn by his wife, Jessie. In place of the standard union, this flag displays two rows of 13 stars each, flanking a bald eagle, all in blue outline on a white background. In addition to nine arrows, the eagle carries a calumet, or peace pipe, a symbol more readily recognized by American Indians than the usual olive branch.
