Angkor Wat Poster by VWorks_Studios
Angkor Wat is one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Cambodia. The historic site is situated in the tropical jungles 200 miles northwest of Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. The Angkor period began in 802 AD when King Jayavarman II of the Khmer Empire laid the foundations of his new capital, Angkor. The city grew and flourished, but it wasn’t until 200 years later when Suryavarman II built the temple as his own burial shrine. Later ruler, Jayavarman VII continued building at Angkor and created a huge complex of countless monuments, temples, and shrines. Most temples in the area are Buddhist, but Angkor Wat is the exception; it is a Hindu temple. The temple is surrounded by a moat and encompasses approximately one square mile. Five rounded towers give the temple a distinctive profile. The vast sandstone complex took an army of more than 50,000 workers 37 years to complete. Angkor was abandoned in the 1400’s after a series of erratic monsoons ruined the city’s complex waterworks system leading to civil unrest and ultimately cultural collapse. In 1860 the ruins were rediscovered. Today the ruin of Angkor Wat is one of the greatest historic sites in the entire world.
