Apron: Ad Astra - "Towards the Stars" by Aquavel
This gouache painting, named "Ad Astra" or "Toward the Stars," was painted by the German artist, stage designer and architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel in 1815. Schinkel painted it as the stage setting for the "Queen of the Night" scene in Mozart's "Magic Flute." Working for the stage he created a star-spangled backdrop, as seen in this painting. His stage set is still quoted in modern productions of this perennial piece.
