This is my take on a hundred or so year old mural that overlooks the altar in the sanctuary of my church, Emanuel Lutheran, in Manchester, CT, a place from which I draw many of my artistic inspirations. That painting is easily 30 feet high and was painted by a transplanted Swede sometime around the turn of last century. I drew it for a friend who retired from preaching.
While it’s proportions and ambitions are on an epic scale, it fell a little short of my masterpiece expectations. I tried a new technique whereby I attempted to make Jesus himself clear and concise in the foreground while everyone and everything else blends into the background. Aspects of the picture come off as a little sloppy, but the epic scale is still preserved. At 24” x 30”, this is one of the largest pictures I’ve ever drawn.
