Fray Pedro Font is the first documented user of this scientific instrument in Arizona. He accompanied Capt. Juan Bautista de Anza on his historic expedition to settle what is now San Francisco in 1775. Font used the instrument in making observations and calculations to determine the latitudes of various points along the journey. This design is inspired by those events and accomplishments from not so long ago.
