Benjamin Franklin: called 'The First American' by many biographers and historians. The 10th son of soap maker Josiah Franklin, he was born in Boston on January 17, 1706. He died on April 17, 1790 at the age of 84. Some 20,000 people attended the funeral of the man called 'The Harmonious Human Multitude' and regarded as a sage of his era. Next to Thomas Jefferson, he is perhaps the most quoted of the Founders. This quote, 'Where liberty dwells, there is my country.' is attributed to Franklin in a letter to Benjamin Vaughan, dated March 14, 1783.
