This is a close-up shot of a baby American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis). It is covered in duckweed (Lemna minor), which is considered a very aggressive invader. If colonies of this plant completely cover the surface of a water feature, it will cause severe oxygen depletion, which can be deadly for other inhabitants. This was taken at Brazos Bend State Park, Needville, Texas. Needville is located about an hour southwest of Houston.
