Billy Caldwell was born approx. 1780 and died in 1841 presumably of cholera. Born to a British officer father and a Mohawk Indian woman, Billy ultimately spent most of his time with his Indian family and became very influential in aiding the negotiation of the final series of treaties signed by the United Bands of Potawatomis, Ottawas and Ojibwas of Wisconsin and Illinois, as well as being a translator. After his services were no longer needed, he migrated with his Indian family side to Missouri and Iowa where he managed their business affairs and negotiated on their behalf with American officials.
