Did You Know?
The Black Crowned Night Heron, Nycticorax nycticorax, is the most widely distributed species of heron in the world, with a range that spans five continents.
Conservation In The US
US populations of this heron declined notably in the 1960's due to the widespread use of the pesticide DDT, but have rebounded since it was banned. Due to their location near the top of the food chain they are used by scientists as an indicator of ecosystem health. This species is still considered an endangered species in the US states of Pennsylvania and Indiana and a threatened species in the US states of Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky and New Jersey. This heron is also listed as a a "species of greatest conservation need" in the US states of Maryland and New York and a species of special concern in the US states of Michigan and Wisconsin.
Habitat destruction, habitat alteration, resulting declines in food supply and contamination of food supplies by pesticides and other contaminants are the chief threats to this species. This species is protected in the US under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Due to population rebounds in some parts of it's range, including Louisiana, this species is not presently protected under the Endangered Species Act.
How You Can Help
Individuals can protect the water quality in their areas by eliminating use of lawn pesticides and inorganic fertilizers, and by disposing of used motor oil properly. Do not approach or disturb nesting colonies. Preserve wetland and marsh habitats in your area. Children can learn more about ecology, including habitat restoration and wildlife conservation with this ecology primer.

The Black Crowned Night Heron In Paraguay
The black crowned night heron is also one of the more than 310 species (11 of which are globally threatened, and 17 of which are near threatened) found in the San Rafael preserve of Paraguay, and was sighted during the avifauna inventory project there in 2006. The San Rafael preserve is part of the greater Pantanal / Chaco region.
The Pantanal River Basin is a floodplain of the Rio Paraguay and is often referred to as the world's largest wetland. The unique ecological picture of the area is complete only when you include the Chaco, which includes areas of both humid and dry grasslands that border the Pantanal. The Pantanal is therefore described as a unique environmental transition zone from the palm savanna of the Low Chaco to the more forested, wet rainforests of Amazonia. The Pantanal has an animal species density and biodiversity that is matched only by parts of Africa. The area supports over 600 species of birds, including migratory bird species from three major migration flyways that use the area as a stopover and winter nesting ground.
World Land Trust is saving rainforest and other threatened wildlife habitats that support and sustain species like the snowy egret. By working with it's partner organization, Guyra, and the Paraguayan government, WLT is purchasing key parts of this vital environment in order to provide for their permanent protection.

An average American worker goes through about 500 disposable coffee cups per year.
Your business can show it's ethical commitment to the environment and ending the disposable cup practice in an attractive and economical way with this excellent corporate gift.
