Homer resident David Hannum (shown in frame) was the leading financial backer of one of the biggest hoaxes in history. In 1869, George Hull carved a 10 foot tall man out of a block of gypsum. It was artificially aged and buried on his cousin's farm, where this huge petrified "man" was "discovered." Huge crowds came to see it at the comparatively steep fee of 50 cents per person. P.T. Barnum offered Hannum $30,000 to buy it, but Hannum refused, leading Barnum to construct his own Giant and claim it was the original. Barnum told the newspapers he bought it from Hannum who was now displaying a copy. The public bought Barnum's story, leading Hannum (not Barnum as generally believed) to say: "There's a sucker born every minute."
