Cave drawings - Famous Prehistoric Paleolithic Art from Lascaux - the Chinese Horse
This stunning ancient "chinese" horse image is a horse pictograph, estimated to be 20,000 years old. The cave drawing is from the famous French cave called Lascaux, located in the Dordogne region in France, where there are a lot of caves that were decorated by cave men, or Paleolithic man. This group of Paleolithic caves is within close proximity to each other in the southwestern French countryside.
The horse cave painting shows a single horse running across the wall. The horse has a distorted large belly and little spindly legs and head, almost as if the cave men were more interested in the meaty portions!
Lascaux Cave Drawings from France
The prehistoric Lascaux cave was discovered in 1940 by four teenagers, and opened to the public in 1948. In less than 10 years, the cave was visibly damaged by the carbon dioxide produced by the hoards of visitors who wanted to see the gorgeous paleolithic cave drawings. Lascaux closed in 1963 to preserve the art, although a replica cave, called Lascaux II can be viewed by the public. This pictograph is from the Lascaux cave, part of the "Chinese Horses" so-called because of the ancient horse paintings' resemblance to Sung Dynasty horse paintings. Lascaux contains 2,000 figures, over 900 of which are animals.
