Dayak elephant art fridge magnet
by Rebecca_ReederIndigenous Indonesian craft
Handcrafted art by ancestors of the Dayak people from the island of Borneo where the gentle-natured pygmy elephant once thrived. Today, the World Wildlife Fund estimates that there are probably fewer than 1,000 of these Borneo elephants remaining. The terrain on which these pygmy elephants thrive is the same land preferred by loggers and palm oil plantations. According to WWF, "About 40 percent of forest cover in the Malaysian state of Sabah, where most pygmy elephants [remain], has been lost to logging, [palm oil] plantations ... over the last four decades..."
