About this design
Deering Oaks, circa 1900 Poster
In 1879, the heirs of James Deering, Nathaniel and Henry, donated land south of their homestead on Bedford Street to Portland for use as a park, in exchange that the taxes on their property would not increase for 10 years. The City had attempted to purchase the land in the 1850s, but were refused. Additional property was acquired from the heirs of Mary Preble for $9000, bringing the total acreage of Deering Oaks Park to 44.62 acres. The park was also bounded by Green Street (now Forest Ave), Grove Street (now Deering Avenue) and Portland Street (now Park Ave). Casco Tannery was to the east, and it was recommended at the time to purchase those lands as well, but was not completed until many years later. City Engineer William Goodwin drew up the plans, soon after he had done so for the Eastern and Western Promenades, influenced by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. The tidal mill pond was converted to fresh water. Marginal Way, recently constructed across Back Cove, was to connect with Grove Street via the old railbed of the Portland & Kennebec, but was never completed. A bandstand was built in 1883, and the pond's duck house completed in 1887.
