Diogenes & Dogs Poster Print by Gérôme
This is a digital painting of "Diogenes of Sinope" by French painter Jean-Léon Gérôme. It shows the famous Greek philosopher Diogenes (404-323 BC) seated in his earthenware tub home in the public marketplace. He is surrounded by dogs. These are his companions and they symbolize his "Cynic" philosophy and austerity. Diogenes made a virtue of poverty. He was famous for his philosophical acts such as carrying a lighted lantern in order to search for an honest human being.

Jean-Léon Gérôme painted Diogenes in 1860. It is an oil on canvas and is in the collection of the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, MD.
