About this design
East Prussia postcard
The German Order of Teutonic Knights, led by their Grandmaster in East Prussia, c.1200A.D. Also shown is the Grandmaster's Symbol which was a cross emblazened with the eagle of the Holy Roman Empire. The Hochmeister (Grand Master), was the highest leader of the Deutscher Orden (Teutonic Knights). The Grand Masters were elected leaders who governed the lands of the Teutonic State, encompasing primarily what we call today Former East Prussia, Latvia, Estonia and parts of Lithuania. The Teutonic State's purpose was to convert Baltic pagans to Christianity and to create a well organized, efficient and powerful military government. The State existed from 1198 until the mid-16th century.
