About this design
Fort Sumter December 9th 1863 by John Ross Key Gallery Wrap Canvas
Fort Sumter, December 9th 1863, View of South East Angle by: John Ross Key.

Interior view of Fort Sumter having undergone considerable damage. Soldiers sitting amongst rubble, hauling sacks, and climbing a ladder. Ripped Confederate flag flying. Exhibit caption: When Confederate forces under General P.T. Beauregard bombarded Fort Sumter in April 1861, the Federal troops soon evacuated in the first engagement of the Civil War. When Federal troops returned, the Confederate forces occupying the fort withstood almost constant bombardment from July 1863 to February 1865. In this historic image, artist John Ross Key graphically depicts the interior of Fort Sumter already in ruins in 1863. General P.T. Beauregard, who signed the paper accompanying the drawing, (lower left hand corner) eventually became one of the eight full generals of the Confederacy.
