Suggestive and romantic photography of glamorous girls and women first appeared in about 1835 with the invention of daguerreotype photography. However, because of the extreme cost of early photographs only the upper class enjoyed romantic and suggestive style photographs.
The French are widely accepted as the pioneers of suggestive and erotic photography, producing risqué and suggestive postcards which became the subject of an investigation in the 1860s after they were found in the possession of US troops. Street dealers, tobacco shops and a variety of other stores bought the photo postcards for resale to American and European tourists as pin ups, erotica and naughty souvenirs. Edited
