Made by ray-tracing. Each "bead" is made of a different kind of virtual glass. At "12 o'clock" the index of refraction is 1, so the bead vanishes. At "3 o'clock" it's zero, so the bead reflects all incoming light. At "6 o'clock" it's -1 and at "9 o'clock" it's infinite (so a ray of light bounces forever inside the bead).
