About this design
George Washington As A Freemason Portrait, 1867.
George Washington, the first President of the United States (1789–1797) was initiated into Freemasonry in 1752. He had high regards for the Masonic Order for it's dedication to the Enlightenment principles of rationality, reason and fraternalism. Washington was named Master in the Virginia charter of Alexandria Lodge No. 22. in 1788. (credit: wikipedia) This circa 1867 print includes portraits of Masons Andrew Jackson and the Marquis de Lafayette on either side of Washington, as well as biblical scenes and Freemason symbols. Washington wears a Masonic apron, the apron symbolizes innocence and sacrifice. The trowel in his right hand, another traditional masonry tool, symbolizes the spreading of brotherly love.
