Gondolas (1899). Artist: John Singer Sargent (1856-1925). Gondolas is a vintage Victorian fine art maritime painting featuring gondola boats in a canal in Venice, Italy.
About the artist: John Singer Sargent was the most successful portrait painter of his era. During Sargent's long career, he painted more than 2,000 watercolors, 900 oil paintings, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings. An avid traveler, each destination offered pictorial stimulation and treasure. Even at his leisure, he painted with restless intensity, often painting from morning until night. Sargent is usually not thought of as an Impressionist painter, but he sometimes used impressionistic techniques to great effect with his own version of the impressionist style.
