About this design
HAWKE BAY NZ
Hawke Bay is a large bay on the eastern coast of the North Island of New Zealand. It stretches from the Mahia Peninsula in the northeast to Cape Kidnappers in the southwest, a distance of some 100 kilometres. Captain James Cook, sailing in HM Bark Endeavour, sailed into the bay on October 12, 1769. After exploring it, he named it for Sir Edward Hawke, First Lord of the Admiralty on October 15, 1769, describing it as some 13 leagues (about 40 miles) across. ***************** This area of the New Zealand coast is subject to tectonic uplift, with the land being raised out of the sea. For this reason, the coastal land in this area has significant marine deposits, with both marine and land dinosaur fossils having been found inland. The Napier earthquake of February 3, 1931 resulted in several parts of the seabed close to the city of Napier being raised above sea level. Because the central mountain ranges come close to the coast at the north end of the bay, much of the bay's northerly coastline has deeply eroded tablelands that end in steep seaside cliffs which descend to narrow beaches. ***************************** The town of Wairoa lies to the north end of the bay, at the mouth of the Wairoa River and its flood plain, while the port city of Napier lies on the coast near the southern end of the bay, on the edge of another flat river flood plain. The Hawke's Bay region, which is distinct from the bay itself, lies on the coastal land around the bay and also in the hinterland to the south. ********************* Shibboleth: It is important to note that the bay itself is Hawke Bay, whereas the region which surrounds it bears the bay's former name, Hawke's Bay. ************************************** The pennant coralfish or Coachman, Heniochus acuminatus, is a tropical fish of the family Chaetodontidae. It is also known colloquially as the "poor man's moorish idol".The fish is mostly black and white, with an elongated dorsal fin making the fish reach around 25 cm. The fish's caudal, anal and pectoral fins are most commonly bright yellow. It is very similar in appearance to the closely related Heniochus diphreutes, but has a longer and more circular shape.*****************The species are social fish, and found in pairs or in shoals. They are a very passive fish, and rarely territorial. Some individuals even act as cleaners, especially when young, by removing parasites from other fish. The pennant coralfish eats mostly plankton in the wild but are omnivorous in an aquarium setting.********The pennant coralfish's natural distribution is in the Indian and Pacific oceans in reef settings, from southern Japan to Micronesia and Lord Howe Island. Also found in the Seychelles.********It inhabits deep, protected lagoons and channels, and the deeper parts of outer reef slopes. The fish is uncommonly harvested for anything other than the marine aquarium industry. It is a fish commonly sold as an alternative to the Moorish idol, which are considered to be nearly impossible for most hobbyists to keep. It is fairly easy to care for when maintained in a properly-sized aquarium with peaceful tank mates.
