I am not sure why you are saying these things to me. I only spoke of what happened to me in my country and the signs I see taking place in this country. Your post makes you sound very agitated and upset. It is true, I am an American and I have been one since the late 1950's, when I came here in my twenties. How long have you been an American? I was able to get out of Bulgaria a few years after Todor Zhivkov took power. You are quite right about the socialist states that do not subscribe to the Marxist (Communist) philosophy. There are many countries who, in addition to Chile, are trying to make that system work. Places like India, Portugal, Egypt, Nicaragua are the most immediate I can think of. You can probably think of more. The problem still exists that it must be paid for--this may be why business owners and taxpayers are probably up in arms in some of these systems. The small taxes add up and the cost must be unbearable for many. I never said, nor implied that socialism had to do with the subjugation of the masses by a Stalin type person, although some forms of socialism may lead to this. What you are describing is communism, not socialism. Pure socialism is not sustainable, for there never seem to be enough taxpayers to pay for it. This often leads to enough strife and hardship for communism to step in and take over. A famous American president (I am sure you know his name) once said that it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt. Thanks for reading. Isn't our freedom of speech a wonderful thing; a great way to be exposed to diverse ideas. АЗ надежда your обучение на този вещество ще не бъда също строг за там сте не много страна ние мога казан движа към.

It didn't happen in your country, you're probably an American. If it did happen in 'your country' you would have used its name to give an example. Socialism does not mean the subjugation of the masses by a Stalin any more than Capitalism means the oppression of a people by a General pinochet. These systems should be able to exist without the destruction of freedom and free speach. The fact that socialism has been abused in the past is not a strong enough argument to dismiss it as a system of government. Moreover moderate socialist states do not tumble of their own accord quite as frequently as people lead us to believe: Chile was on the right track and businesses didn't like it so the CIA stepped in.
Too many people on the right of any debate refuse to recognise that everything is a question of degree; just as medicare can exist in a capitalist america so a strong private sector can exist for a number of industries within a socialist state.

I am surprise by your ignorance of socialism. I am assuming you are an American, it is hard to tell on an Internet site like this. I was raised in a country that was socialist. It eventually went communist just after I came to this country. You are misinformed if you think socialism is about trivial things such as firemen and policemen and roads. Private companies have generally not wanted to own and manage these "businesses" because they are generally not profitable.
Socialism has to do with the direct confiscation of private property and/or the management of that private property and businesses. I have seen this happen. It happened quickly in my country because of the economic chaos taking place there at the time. I believe educated people are concerned about the direction this President is taking--administration of the health care industry, 1/8 of the U.S. economy, the potential ownership and administration of the financial industry, another 1/8 of our economy, the potential ownership takeover of two of this country's auto makers, the energy industry, and who knows what's next. I have seen this before and I too am very concerned. You should be too. Fortunately, this country has more elections than where I was from. Fortunately, U.S. citizens may be able to make a better decision in two years and four years. If not, I can only tell you that you will not like what is to come.

Not that great of a design anyway... might as well turn this into a forum.
Americans react negatively to socialism because they are too used to putting the individual (themselves) before the group. Think about it. Do you actually know exactly what socialism is? Really?

You lose freedom when you take away socialism. Whose government public water will you drink then?
I see that you don't like socialism. Please then do not call your police or fire department. Do not drink your tap water and do not go to your public library. Do not drive on public roads or highways because each of the preceding involves government employees. After all socialism involves government employees providing a service or product. I realize you don't want doctors working for the government but it also appears you don't like police officers, firemen, highway department people librarians and water department employees working for the government either. Why don't you just create you own country and leave America if you don't like socialism? I didn't even mention that the military appears a socialist construct as well. Soldiers work for the government as well. I have a clue for you. Regular citizens create government so everyone of the above employees work for us.

What carnival said... Having to watch what I say every waking moment so that Homeland Security doesn't whisk me away to interrogate me is not exactly what I call freedom.

I said goodbye to freedom somewhere after 9/11 and through-out the following 8 years. where you been? :)
