Glossary

alignment
The alignment of text refers to the positioning of multiple lines of text relative to each other. Text can be left, center, and right-aligned. On left-aligned text, the left sides of all the lines of text line up. On right-aligned text, the right sides of all the lines of text line up. On center-aligned text, the center of all the lines of text line up.

compression
Storing data in a format that requires less space than usual. Compressing a computer file reduces its size. For example, the JPEG image format uses compression to reduce the size of the image file.

copyright
Copyright is an intellectual property right automatically and immediately granted to the creator of an original work giving economic rights of control over copying, adapting, displaying, distributing, performing, etc. the created work. So, if you created a work and did not copy it (or some portion of it) from someone else, you own the rights to it. Visit the United States Copyright Office for more information.

dpi
Abbreviation for dots per inch, which indicates the resolution of printed images. The higher the dpi, the higher the resolution of the image. A printer that can print at 300dpi can print 300 dots per inch vertically and horizontally, so it can print 90,000 dots per square inch.

digital camera
A camera that stores images digitally as image files rather than recording them on film. These image files can be downloaded to a computer, stored on the hard disk, manipulated with a graphics design program, and printed.

file size
The amount of data in a given file. File size can also be thought of as the amount of space that a given file takes on a computer hard drive.

image file
An image file is a computer file which stores image information. Graphics design programs, digital cameras, scanners and other image-related hardware and software all store and access image files.

image size
The pixel dimensions of a given image. Image size is expressed in terms of pixels. For example, a given image could have an image size of 640 pixels by 480 pixels. When using the Zazzle Design Program, it helps to understand how image size relates to the physical size of the product: see the Image Size Guide for more information.

JPEG
JPEG is a compression technique for color images. Image files stored in the JPEG format are usually a fraction of their original size. The JPEG format allows for different levels of compression. However, the greater the compression, the more original information is lost, which reduces the image quality.

orientation
Used in the Zazzle Design Program to refer to the size and location of the design space on a product. For example, when designing an apparel product, you can choose to have the design either vertically or horizontally oriented.

pixel
Abbreviation for picture element, a pixel is a single point in a graphic image that represents a single color. Image size is expressed in terms of pixels - the number of pixels across by the number of pixels down.

ppi
Abbreviation for pixels per inch, which indicates the resolution of an image. The ppi of an image determines the size that it will be printed at. For example, when an image stored at 100ppi is printed, every 100 pixels of information in the image maps to 1 inch on the print. The image will print that way regardless of the dpi capability of the printer - if a 300dpi printer prints a 100ppi image, it will print 9 dots (3 x 3) for every pixel in the image.

public galleries
Used (at Zazzle.com) to refer to the galleries of products that everyone (the public) can both view and order from. When you create a product, you have the option of contributing it to the public galleries (and making a 10% royalty every time it sells), or keeping it private in their own private gallery, where only they can view and order it.

quality
With respect to JPEG images, quality describes the amount of compression in a JPEG image. The higher the compression, the lower the quality (because more information is lost). Conversely, the lower the compression, the higher the quality. Therefore, JPEG images with higher quality are larger in file size.

resolution
The sharpness or clarity of an image. The term is commonly used to described monitors, printers, and graphic images. For images, the resolution is expressed in terms of ppi, or the number of pixels which describe an inch (of the printed image). On physical objects, resolution is expressed in terms of dpi (dots per inch).

scanner
A scanner is like a copier, except that instead of making the copy onto paper, it creates a computer image file of the scanned image. Once the image is in this digital form, you can store it on your computer hard disk, manipulate it with a graphics design program, upload it in the Zazzle Design Program, and more.

upload
To transmit data from a computer to a mainframe, network, etc. When you add an image in the Zazzle Design Program, you are uploading an image from your computer to our servers.
