I WANT YOU TO SPEAK ENGLISH OR GET OUT! T-shirt by skphotos

Actually, many do change for us...for American tourists, at least. I was in Guatemala in May and when we were in the more 'ordinary' area of Xela - a big city but much more Guatemalan than elsewhere - sure, I depended on my brother to speak for me if I wanted something. But you go to Antigua, a big tourist spot, and many of the merchants will talk in English soon as they see your face, regardless the fact that you asked "cuanto cuesta" instead of "how much is this." Here in Elkhart, I live in a part of town that's become very Hispanic over the years, and you know what, I don't mind. If I ran across someone like Kerry described, that would be a problem for sure, but also if this country has such a growing Hispanic population...well, it's worth recalling that there was a lot of the same animosity when great numbers of Irish crossed the pond longer ago, and hell, they spoke English already. ...can't decide whose comment I like better, Dianne_Reum's or maximus7's...

The T-shirt
For all you liberal, why can't we get along types, you need to wake up. This T-shirt is right on the mark. I spent my entire adult life in the Navy, living and travelling in countries most of you can't pronouce. Not once did the locals change the language rules because we were there. Teddy Roosevelt said it best, We are one country, under one flag, and one language. If you want to live here, learn to speak the native tongue or go home. You guys don't change for us, we sure as hell shouldn't have to change for you. And the Canadieans, you had a choice, and you made the wrong one. Sorry.

my own personal interpretation
is that this is directed at those immigrants who REFUSE to learn English. When I still worked outside the home, I worked with a Chinese woman - who was a very nice woman - but we ccould barely understand her, we had to point at computer screens and paper to communicate and she had been here for close to 15 years. A large part of any position over entry level required a lot of telelphone communication with clients. Every year she wanted a promotion. Every year she was told that if she were willing to take the English as a Second Language course that the company would pay 100% they would put her up for the next available spot. She refused every time. For whatever reason, she absolutely refused to learn one single word more than necessary to exist in this country. And then threatened to sue for discrimination, but naturally, she didn't have a case because she signed a paper every year saying that she refused to take the free course. Don't get me wrong, I liked her, she was nice. But it was a very deadline oriented job with multiple deadlines throughout the day. It was very frustrating to literally have to take 20 minutes to figure out what she needed help with when it probably could have been solved in 5 if only we could have communicated. As others have said, had I chosen to take one of the companies transfers to another country, I would have been expected to learn the language there, despite the fact that most citizens of those particular countries would also speak English. If you don't, you're and arrogant American. If we expect people, once they are here to make a serious effort to learn American, we're arrogant Americans. We can't win for losing. I don't expect they have to set foot here knowing the language, and I know a new language takes time. I just think there should be a reasonable effort. That's what I think of when I see this. Sorry for the long post - but... I had a story to tell.

These new crops of illegal aliens arent learning English, American values, history, and culture... they are bringing their 3rd world ideas and attitudes and LANGUAGE with them. Over my dead body. As keyboarddude said, if any of us moved to a foreign country, there would be every expectation for us to learn language, customs, traditions, etc of that country. I'm sick of all the whining. This isnt about racial hatred. The only place that idea came from is within your own mind. Its about THE LAW OF THE LAND and not burdening the honest, law-abiding, tax-paying, middle class American citizen with extra taxes to pay for these border jumper criminals and their demand of our social services... which means OUR tax monies. I dont care where an alien comes from, as long as they went through the same process everybody else did. Did they stand in line and wait their turn? Riiiight. Well, while they're waiting, they can learn English to pass the test, as well as get the instruction manual on how to become a productive, American citizen who doesnt drain the social services pot and who sincerely pledges allegiance to our flag.

Speak English or Get Out!
What a bunch of whiners....geez!!! Listen people, this is America..we speak English...hello??? If you don't like the shirt don't buy it...it's called freedom of choice. If you don't like the message....sorry, it's called freedom of speech. The shirt doesn't say "I hate immigrants....that's your own misguided translation.....it says...we speak English...if you want to live here learn the language....if I move to another country, I would automatically assume that I must learn the local, language, customs and laws or pay the consequences, end of conversation....you self imposed do gooders need to get a life.....as for the shirt, I agree with Vio.....nice design,,,,,I'll take a Large........rock on...........

Very nice design... in art sense. But of course it's rather cruel in human sense. On my opinion people who live in America must not learn English by all means but they need. Of course if they want to understand what's going on around them, in the country they live and if they want to understand other people who can't speak their native language or can speak ONLY English. I don't know English well, too. I'm from Ukraine. But how can I speak with you all if I spoke Russian, Ukrainian or even Spanish? That's why I think it's upon a person and his needs... There are many foreigners in my country and in my town. Usually when I meet a person who can't speak no one language I know I never say him "GO OUT!", I try to be understandable and understand him, and of course to help him because it's very difficult to live far from native places. I'm designer... 5 stars for design.

I don't ever say anything bad, I am a peaceful person, but this one I have to agree with Father C on. Remember one thing, Jesus if you believe in him, did not speak English, not that I know of, and I don't think we would say this to him if he came here when he returns. Sorry, but this is a country of immigrants, my Grandparents coming through Ellis Island. They did not speak English when they came here either how many of them did? We have enough hatred and fighting going on in this world, peace is what we need. Let us stress more in our talent the beauty of this country, how lucky we are to have been born here, live here etc. Let's stress more on the good things in life. We all have a right to our opinions, this just happens to be mine.

Maybe it would be better to leave the "Get Out" out of the design. Everyone who wants to live in America should learn to speak English and use it in public places. It bugs me when I have to press "1" on the phone if I want to communicate in English.

FOLLOW UP ON MY LAST STATEMENT....
If you don't already know, I am a Catholic priest, and... I am the pastor of an extremly multi-cultural parish here in Seatlle, Washington. When I saw this messsage I naturally thought of all the people I minister to on a daily baises. Most of these people do not speak a word of English. I have had to return to school to learn Chinese and Lao just so I can speak with them. That's okay. I'm not complaining about that. I just wonder what someone like yourself would have me say to the people here at my church. Should I tell them this... "I want you to speak English or get out", is that what I should say. I have appeared in imagration court on behalf on people who were nearly tourchered to death. Some of there family memebers were put to death. What sould I say to them? Learn English or go back home to die! This is why I react so negitavely to this design. And I want you to know that I have already asked the managent of Zazzle to have this product (and all products being this image) removed from the public gallery. I want you to know this because I am not the kind of person to anonymously hit the 1 star button and run. What can I say now, other than I will keep you in my prayers. God bless you, Father C.

It's just this kind of - - - - that makes me feel ashmed to be an American. How sad it is when something like this which are rooted in ignorace hatred and fear can receive such praise from others. How very sad...

Message to krusader: This is America & if you want to live here then you have to learn English - period. If you don't want to speak English, then move somewhere else. Americans should not have to "Press One For English".
