It is said that the flag of Italy is based on the design of the flag of France. Where the colors of the Italian Flag derive from is still a matter of some debate. Some say that the colors of the Italian flag may have been based on military uniforms from Milan. Others suggest that the blue of the French flag was replaced with green by Napoleon Bonaparte because he liked the color. The current Italian flag was adopted in 1946. The kanji (Chinese character) for the Italian flag were chosen for phonetic reasons. Actually there are two versions. One version uses four Japanese symbols but the one here uses three as it represents the Italian Tricolor flag better. These days though, Italy is often written using katakana (Japanese syllabary) and is pronounced Italia.
