The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-Angell Animal Medical Center (MSPCA-Angell) is a national and international leader in animal protection and veterinary medicine. Founded in 1868 shortly after the Civil War, it is the second-oldest humane society in the United States. In its 140 year history, the MSPCA-Angell has seen vast changes in society, the environment, and the roles of animals in our lives. It has helped make laws and set standards that have fundamentally shaped our sense of kindness and care for animals -- and for one another.

George Thorndike Angell achieved passage of the state's first general anticruelty laws. Soon after more than 200,000 copies of the first newsletter helped raise public awareness of animal cruelty. The periodical's mission: "To speak for those who cannot speak for themselves."

Today, the MSPCA-Angell continues to rescue, shelter, protect, heal and advocate for more animals than any other American humane organization -- giving hands-on care to 250,000 animals each year. We also provide emergency assistance and strategic-planning help for animal-protection groups across the country and around the globe. Through our legislative work, humane-education efforts and community-based assistance initiatives -- such as Phinney's Friends, Pets in Housing, the Spay/Neuter Assistance Program and Living With Wildlife -- we help create lasting change for animals and people.

The MSPCA-Angell is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that does not receive any funding from state/federal agencies or fellow SPCAs. All donations made to the MSPCA-Angell are tax-deductible.
