This Legion was raised by Caesar in Cisalpine Gaul in 58 BC for the campaign against the Helvetii. It served under Caesar throughout the Gallic War, then in Italy in 49, and at Pharsalus. It was disbanded in 46-45, then re-formed by Mark Antony in 44-43. It served under Antony in the East until 31, and afterwards was sent to Egypt under Octavian. Its emblem was a thunderbolt.
