Lion Cub with Rainbow in Eye Kitchen Towels
THE LIONS, THE FLOOD AND THE RAINBOW I love cats of all kinds. In order to tell the story of the Great Flood of Genesis more intimately and from a different perspective I was inspired to depict a lion family. Also subconsciously C.S. Lewis’ story of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe probably influenced me. I love the part where it says: “No, He’s not a tame lion but He is good.” God can orchestrate some pretty astounding events and we don’t always understand His ways. God exercised great patience before He executed His justice. The suffering of His creation saddens God. This pathos was shown in the third painting with the lion’s faces as they are drowning in the deluge. In the last painting the rainbow in the cub’s eye has the image of The Savior. In this case one may think it refers to Noah, but spiritually it represents the salvation we have in none other than Jesus Christ. The ark: Noah’s ark was refuge for the few who believed God. (Gen. 6:19-7:5) It was representative of the coming salvation and baptism brought only through belief in Jesus' death and resurrection. All who are called by the Lord through Jesus Christ enter into his salvation (the ark) by faith. (Galatians 3:27-29) The ark Noah built delivered Noah and his family from a watery grave. (Gen. 7:7) Jesus Christ's delivers us from the wrath of God through immersion in His blood. A baptism if you will. Not the physical, but a spiritual baptism. (Romans 5:9, 6:3-4 and 1 Peter 3:21) The rainbow: In addition to God promise (covenant) never to destroy the world by flood again it also represents the promise of the New Covenant in Jesus Christ. The Animals: God called the animals to come to Noah; (first painting) one male and one female of each kind and some extra for sacrifice. Noah offered the blood of clean animals as a sacrifice. (Gen. 8:20-9:6) Jesus offered Himself as the ultimate sacrifice. (1 Peter 1:18-19) Noah was not perfect. He was described as a" righteous man, blameless among all the people of his time. He also walked with God." (Gen. 6:9) Jesus was and always will be the only perfect and blameless man. (Heb. 4:15) The Pitch: Today we call ‘pitch’ tar. The Hebrew word for ‘pitch’ is ‘kaphar’ and it is used seventy times in the Bible to mean atonement as it relates to blood sacrifice. The one exception is here in Genesis where it refers to the substance which covers the ark inside-and-out. Atonement: The reconciliation of God and humans brought about by the redemptive life and death of Jesus. “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.” Romans 5:8-9 The Door: As per God’s instructions, there is only one door; just one way to board the ark and only one way to salvation – through belief in the death, burial and resurrection Jesus Christ for ones sins. “I am the door, if anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture…I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father except through Me.” John 10:9; 14:6 Don’t miss the boat! “But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the Flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the Ark, and knew not until the Flood came, and took them all away, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” Mathew 24:37-39
