Caption on the margins reads, "New chapel, head Sumter St, battered by Sherman. Used as gymnasium, and Prof McElroys workshop, and drawing rooms." The Greek Temple style building was constructed in 1855 as a chapel and auditorium for South Carolina College, but suffered from poor acoustics that were apparently uncorrectable. During the Civil War it and other buildings on campus served as a Confederate hospital. It was converted into a science facility in 1888, a gymnasium in 1893, and finally a theatre-in-the-round in 1976.
