Woodcut Maps was started in 2011 and launched publicly in 2012 by husband-wife team Gabe Smedresman and Catherine Herdlick, both professional game developers. The idea emerged from their backgrounds in designing location-based games, software engineering, architecture, democratizing design, and product design. Their first Woodcut Map was of Yale’s campus, a wedding gift for two of Gabe’s friends from undergraduate school. Subsequent pre-launch maps included Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri for Catherine’s brother and Fort Lauderdale for Gabe’s grandmother.
