The metal lathes of yesterday look very much like the ones we have today. Not much has really changed, except maybe for the CNC part of it. These machines are ran by a motor, only the motor is in the front of the shop and the rest is belt driven. Long hair is something you will lose very fast, if it doesn't get caught in the lathe, it will surely get caught in the belts.
