A registered nurse, Sanger's passion for legalized family planning and sex education stemmed from her experiences seeing women die from dangerous, unintended pregnancies, and self-induced abortions. Fun Fact: Birth control supplies were difficult to come by, and transporting birth control supplies and educational materials across state lines was a federal crime. However, diaphragms were plentiful in Manhattan, and back in Ohio, Sanger and the Maternal Health Association needed them. The solution? Sanger and other activists would take trains to New York with empty suitcases, fill them with diaphragms and contraceptive jelly, and illegally transport them back to Cleveland, where they were discreetly distributed. *Bitchin'*.
