The Markhor is an asian wild goat found in the Western Himalayas. They belong to a group of animals called 'goat-antelopes', which includes the musk ox, the chamois and the domestic goat. Markhor have spiralling horns, which can grow to over a meter and a half long in males. They are found at altitudes of 600 to 3600 meters high. Males are usually solitary and females gather in herds of about 9 individuals. They typically inhabit scrub forests made up primarily of oaks, pines, and junipers. Markhor are also the largest goat species. They can stand over 3 feet and weigh over 200 pounds. The Markhor is an endangered species due to intensive hunting (for trophies, meat and the Asian medicine market), disturbance and loss of habitat due to expanded human settlement, and competition from domestic livestock. figbeater.deviantart.com
