Entrance to a kiva, Spruce tree house, Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado
Tha Ancient Pueblo People or Anasazi were a prehistoric Native American culture in the Southwest of the USA.
They are best known for the cliff dwellings constructed from adobe and send stone.
Kiva is a hopi word. It means "ceremonial room". In Mesa Verde the kivas were underground chambers.
The roof was covered by beams and mud and was supported by pillars. There was a hole in the center of the roof. This was the only access to the interior, by a ladder.
The small hole in the floor is called sipapu, which grants acces to the underworld. There is a chimney to ventilate the kiva. The stone stab between the firepit and the ventilator hole is an air deflector.
