Microscopic View of Martian Soil Posters
by Space_ExplorationThis is a view of the soil on Mars as seen through the microscope onboard the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity. It shows the interweaving of coarse grains in a layer of fine-grained sand. Scientists are intrigued by the spherical rocks that can be seen in the soil.
This image of soil at Meridiani Planum was produced on Sol 10 (10th solar day since the landing). The colors have been “stretched†in this presentation to allow scientists to better distinguish between the various particles of rock and sand. The spherical ones are especially interesting, because they provide information on the geological processes of rock formation, including the cooling of molten lava droplets and accretion of concentric layers of material around a seed particle. The blue tint in the bottom right corner is a tag used by scientists to indicate that the dust cover is closed.
