The GroverBot argument goes as follows: why should we give our hard-earned tax dollars to a bunch of university poindexters to do research? If a research is worth something, some company will do it and the scientists on their payroll will be paid for their efforts. What this argument conveniently overlooks is the knowledge base that research provides. You want to fund research exclusively through sales revenue? Fine. Fizzer or whoever can take their $100 million for the first pill. But then the authors on any paper a Fizzer scientist ever read each get $50 million. Then the authors of every paper referenced in those papers each get $25 million. And so on. Your can expect prices to go up a couple orders of magnitude. But you should be happy paying that price, it being a free market solution and all. Otherwise, feel free to STFU. The pittance faculty, postdocs, and graduate students make in the forms of salary and stipends is a fraction of what they're really worth, and is a bargain at ten times the price.
