How many orangutans do you see? There are seven youngsters in this photo from Kalimantan, Indonesia (the Indonesian side of the island of Borneo.) However, there's only a glimpse of an arm for some of them.
Orangutans are peaceful vegetarians, much less noisy and volatile than their chimp cousins. Sadly, all great apes (orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees) are endangered species, but orangutans are the only ones surviving in the wild outside of the African continent. In fact, orangutans are found on only two isolated spots on our planet -the island of Borneo and the island of Sumatra. The word orangutan means "people of the forest." When orangutans gaze into your eyes, they truly seem to understand - and it touches one's heart and soul.
The artist donates 100% of her profits from this item to Orangutan Foundation International (www.orangutan.org -not the ORG), founded by the woman who did the original great ape study along with Jane Goodall (chimps) and the late Dian Fossey (with mountain gorillas.) All three women were selected by Dr. Louise Leakey back in the early 1970's, and their studies were ground breaking.
