DRACUNCULUS, also called Guinea Worm, is a parasite which definitely lives up to its ominous proper name. Threadlike females may grow up to three feet in length, and cause excruciating pain as they tunnel through the skin of their host and create a burning, open sore. The parasite intends for its host to immerse the sore in water for relief, and will release its swimming larvae at the first opportunity. Larvae infect tiny, freshwater crustacea in the hopes of being accidentally swallowed by a human.
