These are large, crow-sized woodpeckers with a loud, laughing call. They are the model for Woody Woodpecker. Unlike Woody, however, they are shy. Our woods have a few that we hear more often than we see, but in the winter they come to the suet. As long as we don't let them see us looking at them, they will eat for a minute or so before they fly off. Quite a sight - quite a delight!
