Why I Advocate for Autism
My younger brother, Cameron is severely autistic and is my inspiration for wanting to spread knowledge on Autism in our community where there is a lack thereof. Cameron loves to spend time with his family, eat, bike riding, cleaning up and taking short walks around the neighborhood with his nieces. He also enjoys music, quiet time and he makes eye contact while moving his lips when you speak to him. The Champion of this fund is his only sister Katrina, a 29 year old single mother of two girls. She is a very involved mother as well as a published author, spoken word performer, poet, host of her own online radio show, blogger, motivational speaker and Autism Activist and journalist by the pen name of Queen Unique.
About the African American Autism Awareness cause:
There is a dire need for Autism Awareness and treatment in the African American and minority communities. The Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta and others report black children have significantly higher rates of mild mental retardation than white children do and socioeconomic factors cannot explain the differences. Many different issues factor into why our children have a higher risk of severe autism including but not limited to: lower incomes, limited or no access to health insurance and limited education. Join our group and make a difference for African American Autism Awareness in your community! Here, you will find active links, ways you can help, resources, updates and soooo much more for this very necessary cause! NOTE: In the years that have passed...we've evolved with sexuality, fashion, hip hop, parenting, life and love...now let's try to evolve our mentalities for a change. Most importantly; I do not believe Autism is a disease, people! It cannot be caught or transmitted through touch, love or simply through studying the defect. Instead of donating money to foundations which only research cures for Autism; maybe we should consider causes which spread awareness, offer seminars and courses to spread understanding and most of all provide funds to lower income families who cannot afford the health insurance or home health care to assist with those affected by Autism and enable them to communicate and adapt in our world. Autism affects 1 in every 150 children (1 every 20 minutes). Embrace change!
