As of result of their persecution, and often times death, first century Christians developed a "symbol language" to identify one another. The fish, possibly based on the story of the loaves and fish is one such symbol. That which looks in English to be the letter X actually represents the Greek letter pronouced Chi - Similar to Christ. In this design the rainbow symbol has been added to the fish so to identify one'self as a Gay, or a Lesbian, Christian.
