The area around Rainbow Springs has been inhabited by humans for more than 10,000 years. It's crystal clear, 72 degree water is abundant with fish and wildlife. It became a tourist attraction in the 1930's, and during it's peak in the 1960's, offered glass-bottomed boat tours and even submarine rides. The first magnitude spring produces between 400-600 million gallons of water per day, fourth in volume in the state. The spring water is discharged through several vents forming the headwaters of the Rainbow River. The spring is located five miles north of Dunnellon, Florida.
