"Save me" wildlife postcard
by Rebecca_ReederKrista, an orangutan orphan, asks for your help
Rain forests are not only essential to the climate of our planet but are home to endangered species, such as the orangutan which is the only great ape outside of the African continent. The gentle orangutan is a vegetarian, having fingerprints and three of the same blood types as we humans. The word orangutan means "people of the forest." You can help save rain forests and orangutans every time you step inside a grocery store simply by avoiding products that contain palm oil, a product for extending shelf life of many packaged foods. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ An update of further concern: August 28, 2008: The Jakarta Post reports that palm oil companies operating in Indonesia have rejected a proposed moratorium on clearing forests and peatlands for oil palm plantations. The burning of these forest areas and the peatlands in particular create incredible pollution. ~~~~~Be informed. Read non-biased articles such as the January 25, 2007, article "Once a Dream Fuel , Palm OIl May Be an Eco-Nightmare" from the New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/31/business/worldbusiness/ 31biofuel.html
