The Hyattsville Branch Library in Prince George's County, Maryland, was built in 1964 at the height of the Space Race. Accordingly, it was built with a giant flying saucer-shaped canopy over the main entrance. It is a distinctive feature of this Mid-Century Modern building. Fast forward to 2013 and the library is slated to be razed and a new library built in its place. We believe the flying saucer should be retained as part of the new facility, both as an homage to the original library which has served the inhabitants of Hyattsville, University Park, and nearby communities for nearly a half century and as a particularly whimsical example of Brutalist architecture.
